DONNA HERULA 'BANG AT THE DOOR' (INDEPENDENT/USA IMPORT)
Out of Chicago comes DONNA HERULA, a gifted singer/songwriter/guitarist who releases her 3rd album with Bang At The Door. Besides Donna on vocal, resonator/slide and other guitars, we can hear FJ Ventre (upright bass), Dana Thalheimer (drums and percussion), John Shain (producer, mandolin and guitar on two tracks) her husband Tony Nardiello (sings and plays guitar on a couple of tracks), Tony Pons on trumpet, Doug Hammer and Daryl Davis on piano, Bill Newton on harp, and Anne Harris on fiddle, while as backing vocalists we can hear Rebecca Toon, Katherine Davis, Janine Grandsart, and Chris Holda along with Shain, Ventre, husband Tony and herself.
There are 14 songs on her new album, which musically speaking is a mixture of acoustic driven old school Chicago Bluesrock and Delta Blues/Country/Americana, with a focus on Donna’s amazing vocal talents. Highlights on her new album are Can’t Wait To See My Baby (duet with Tony Nardiello), Not Lookin’ Back, I Got No Way Home, Black Ice and the superb Fixin’ To Die. Donna has had a rough period, losing both her mother and her mother-in-law, and then the pandemic hit the world, so this album Bang At The Door is indeed sounding like a big bang record with strong lyrics, great musicianship and lovely vocals by Donna.
